Frequently Asked Questions
Questions People Ask Us
Is This Journey For Me?
-
That is exactly what the first conversation is for. Tell us what is calling you and we will help you find the right fit. If none of our current journeys are the right match, we will curate a journey that will be the right fit for you.
-
Absolutely. The majority of our travellers do not know their specific ancestral lineage, and that does not diminish the experience in any way. This journey connects you to the broader story of the African diaspora. Your desire to connect is the only prerequisite. Whether you carry this heritage in your blood, in your bonds, or in your belief, we have a place for you.
-
Nobody is. And that is perfectly fine. We have never had a traveller arrive feeling fully prepared for what this journey holds, and every single one has told us afterward that waiting for "readiness" would have meant waiting forever.
-
Yes. We have hosted many accompanying travellers, and they consistently describe the experience as one of the most meaningful of their lives. Partners, family members, and friends of any background are welcomed to share the experience with you.
-
Some of our travellers have visited Ghana for cultural tourism, festivals, or the Year of Return. The heritage reconnection journey is a completely different experience. This goes deeper.
-
This is not a religious or spiritual programme. We welcome travellers of all faiths and none. The experience is grounded in history, culture, and personal transformation rather than any specific spiritual framework.
-
Our travellers have ranged from their twenties to their eighties. There is no typical age for a homecoming. Some come as young adults seeking identity. Some come as elders fulfilling a lifelong dream. Some come as multigenerational families experiencing it together. The journey is designed to hold everyone.
-
We welcome all families. For younger children, we can discuss which elements of the itinerary are appropriate and whether adjustments are needed. Please reach out so we can talk through the specifics of your family's situation.
The Journey Itself
-
Every journey we host is unique with different pacing depending on the individuals on the trip. Please reach out to us if you want our assistance to decide which journey will be suitable for you.
-
Our cultural custodians are usually either historians, storytellers, or community members who guide your experience. They are not hired guides reading from a script. They understand both the African context and the diaspora perspective and are chosen for their depth in knowledge of the culture and heritage.
-
Both. Heritage site visits and cultural experiences are sometimes shared as a group, which is essential because the collective witnessing is part of what makes the experience so powerful. But we also build in time where you are free to rest or explore on your own.
-
The naming ceremony is a traditional Ghanaian experience that welcomes a person into the community with a name. For diaspora travellers, it carries a particular significance. It returns something that was taken from your family generations ago. You receive a Ghanaian name and are formally welcomed into the community.
-
Absolutely. Some travellers choose to spend additional days in Accra or other parts of Ghana after the journey concludes. We can recommend accommodations, local experiences, and things to see if you want to extend your time. Just let us know during the planning process and we will help you arrange it.
Practical Travel Details
-
Most nationalities require a visa to enter Ghana. US, UK, and EU citizens can apply for a Ghana visa through the embassy or consulate in their country, or in some cases through an e-visa portal. We provide visa guidance as part of your pre-trip preparation materials, including timelines and application tips. If you are unsure about your specific situation, ask us and we will point you in the right direction.
-
A Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry into Ghana and you will need to carry your Yellow Card as proof. We also recommend being up to date on routine vaccinations and consulting your doctor or a travel health clinic about malaria prophylaxis and any other precautions. Detailed health guidance is included in your pre-trip preparation materials.
-
Ghana is one of the safest and most politically stable countries in West Africa, and it has a long tradition of welcoming diaspora travellers. That said, we take your safety seriously. You will be accompanied by local team members who know the country intimately. We handle all ground transportation, accommodations, and logistics. You will never be navigating unfamiliar territory alone.
-
Ghana is tropical. Expect warm temperatures year-round (typically 25-32°C / 77-90°F), with higher humidity along the coast where most heritage sites are located. There are two rainy seasons roughly April to June and September to November. We provide a detailed packing guide with climate-appropriate clothing recommendations as part of your preparation materials.
-
Ghana uses the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). We recommend bringing some US dollars to exchange upon arrival for personal spending. Credit/debit cards are accepted at some hotels and larger establishments but are less common in smaller towns and markets. ATMs are available in cities. Your personal expenses during the journey (souvenirs, additional snacks, tips) are the primary reasons to carry local currency. We provide specific guidance on amounts and exchange in your pre-trip materials.
-
Hotel standards are usually 4 ot 5 star depending on your preference. Expect comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, air conditioning and reliable wifi in most locations. Shared accommodation is standard, with a single supplement available for those who prefer a private room.
-
International flights to and from Accra are not included. This allows you to book from your own city, use loyalty points or preferred airlines, and potentially extend your stay in Ghana if you wish.
-
Yes. Travel insurance is highly recommended for all travellers. We recommend a policy that covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies, and evacuation especially if you have any serious health conditions. It protects both you and us.
Booking and Payment
-
We recommend booking at least a month before your preferred travel dates. If you are inquiring closer to a departure date and space is available, we will accommodate you. Start the conversation whenever it feels right.
-
It starts with a conversation either through our inquiry form, email, WhatsApp, or a discovery call. We learn about what you are looking for, answer your questions, and confirm which journey is the right fit. Once you are ready, we send you a booking link through our platform where you can secure your place with a deposit.
