More enslaved Africans passed through its coastal dungeons than almost anywhere else on the continent. The castles at Cape Coast and Elmina still stand today, holding the memory of the millions who were taken. You will visit the dungeons where captives were held through “The Door of No Return,” where millions took their final steps on African soil. In 2019, 400 years after the first enslaved Africans were taken from the shores of Africa, Ghana declared the “Year of Return”, a formal invitation to the African diaspora to come home.
